Theater project

Within the framework of a theater project, young people, predominantly Ukrainian youth with experiences of forced displacement, collaboratively develop a theatrical production that connects past and present. Inspired by historical narratives as well as their own experiences of war, flight, life in a new country, and encounters with an unfamiliar society, the participants create a shared script. They write texts, assign roles, rehearse scenes, and enrich the performance with film sequences and black-and-white photographs.

The project combines theater, film, and photography, creating a safe creative space in which young people can express themselves artistically, share their stories, and work together toward a final outcome that will be presented in a public performance.

Main goal

The overall aim of the project is to promote the social, emotional, and cultural integration of young people with experiences of forced displacement and migration. The project strengthens their capacity for creative self-expression, historical awareness, and social competencies, and also helps them better navigate their new living environment and actively participate in it.

Sub-goals

• Development of creative forms of self-expression through writing, acting, video, and photography work.

• Strengthening self-confidence, self-efficacy, and stage presence in public performances.

• Development of teamwork, empathy, and intercultural communication within the group.

• Support in processing experiences of war, forced displacement, and new beginnings through artistic reflection.

• Development of media literacy through the use of camera, sound, and editing techniques.

• Preparation and realization of a public performance as a shared culmination of the project.

Target group

The project is aimed at young people aged approximately 14 to 18 with experiences of forced displacement or migration, primarily from Ukraine, who are living in Germany. Particular attention is given to young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds who have limited access to educational and cultural opportunities and who are affected by educational inequalities.

Where and how often?

The project is designed as a multi-month course format with regular meetings, for example once a week in the afternoon or evening. Rehearsals and workshops take place in suitable spaces such as a school, cultural center, or rehearsal venue in Düsseldorf. Depending on the module (e.g. work on the performance, acting, movement, and dance), the young people work continuously within the same group, which allows for the development of trust, continuity, and an intensive artistic process.

At the end of the project period, a public stage performance takes place, during which the theater production, film sequences, and photographic works are presented.
